JFK-DUB direct is 6 hours. JFK to LHR + LHR-DUB on separate tickets is 7 + 1 hours and I would leave 3-4 hours in between on separate tickets.

Your insistence on flying with Virgin will double your travel time and you will spend 1-2 hours in queues and dragging your bags around (and for a typical itinerary, you'd be doing that at a body clock time of 3-4am when coming from the USA). Now, doubling your travel time might be worth it to save $1400, but if I understand your post correctly,

the $1400 saving is not from going via LHR instead a direct flight, but rather from booking JFK-LHR + LHR-DUB as separate tickets rather than a single ticket JFK-LHR-DUB?
