Redeeming Venture X points through the Capital One portal is exactly the same, plus you don't have to book through the portal. You can use Venture X to purchase travel anywhere, then use points to offset the cost at $0.01/point.
So you’re not at all dependent on getting transfers for value. You can get 1 cpp against all travel purchases…
