Re lounges at JFK, we used the Wingtips for a bit and it was clean and new, though very limited food choices. We hit the Virgin one with Amex platinum card once only to get told it was at capacity and they were not admitting Amex customers. I tried once again two hours later again and I was told the same, but they let us in this time. Interestingly, lounge was less than half full so I am not sure why they were making it so hard. There was a long line for the Amex Centurion lounge and you can only enter 3h before the flight departure time, so we did not go there this time. We checked in rather early, a little more than 4h before departure time.
Funny, same thing happened to us last month. We had a long (6+ hours) layover at JFK so hit up 4-5 lounges lol. The first time we were turned away from Virgin so walked over to the Air India lounge and had a drink there (it reminded me of a BMV waiting room lol). Then went back to Virgin and "she had to check" but finally allowed us in. It wasn't even half full, plenty of places to sit. The food, drinks and atmosphere were great.
