Many airlines don't allow the use of headphones that aren't connected to the IFE except during cruise. Qantas is one such example of that.
Interesting I’ve never had a issue using my airports on QF/JQ, during take off/landing. No one has never said anything about it, when they are doing there pre landings checks.

I don’t think NZ is to worried, they let you use WIFI as soon as the system connect after take off…
