YYZ can't make escalators work consistently. Having them reliably operate and manage some type of sophisticated gating system would be a pipe dream based on some high quallty halluciongens.
It's amazing how bad YYZ has made the terminal. It's more of a shopping mall / food court than an airport. With the crazy high airport improvement fees that everyone pays as part of their ticket, you would think that it would be awesome.
