Hold emerald status via BA if that matters. Does Qantas do cash upgrades at the airport?
Did you look at other airlines, including BA & SQ? Or look for a flight to KUL?

With AU being closed for ~2 years until
21 Feb 2022 and fully open
July 2022, all airlines will be expecting to fill every seat leaving/arriving in the last week of Dec / first week of Jan to/from AU.
No hope of paying for a seat change at less than the full retail fare difference.
