Rather disappointing and small rooms
Introduction Selected this property for my first 2 night stay - especially it was one of the only reasonably priced Hilton property in Singapore (when I booked, later prices seemed to be crazy especially for this property). I was not hoping for much from a Hilton Garden Inn, but since this was an Asia property, my expectation from a HGI was slightly higher. Location The property is located in Littel India area - about 5-10 mins walk from the Little India MRT station. Around the hotel area is a combination of the HDB flats and just around the corner the main Seranggon road which had rows and rows of shops and food/beverage options. The famous Mustafa store is about 10-15 mins walk from the hotel including the Bugis area. From location point, this was really a top location (but the same can be said about the Holiday Inn down the street). Check In I arrived at the hotel just before midnight. I was surprised that the lobby area was still very busy. Since it was after 22h, the main door would only be opened with a key card or by ringing the bell. I was welcomed at the front desk - but for the rest, it was just the usual textbook style. (this seems to be quite common at lots of hotels in Singapore - as the same style at my next hotel). My HHonors status was acknowledged and given a run down of my benefits (bascially the breakfast). Outside of that, no other additional benefits were provided ( not even an upgrade to a high floor nor a better view room). I did comment on this - and as usual the response even from the hotel Manager indicates that they will not go out of their way to show more appreciation of elite members. Room The room allocated to me was in what is known as the Seranggon wing - which you have a linking walkway from the main building at the 4th floor. When I entered the room, I was really shocked as the room was close to the size of a mouse hole - more or less the same size of the room at the HGI in Hong Kong. I had not expected this type of room size in Singapore (yes I understand real estate is expensive). Drectly to the left of the entrance was the bathroom and an open wardrobe to the right. Directly at the end of the short hallway, was the bed and next to it was a long seating area next to the window. Around this was a small table cum working desk. In general the room was well appointed especially from functional point of view. Outside of that, it would not be a room where you would want to spend most of your time in due to the size. There was the usual tea/coffee making facilities. Internet speed was sufficieint and the TV options were a mix of international and local channels. Sleep quality was ok - the bed was good, however the bad thing was that room was not fully sound proof from both external and internal noise - you can hear the traffic from the road and also when guests runs/walk/talk in the hallway. Furthermore, the climate control system I felt was built/installed without further thoughts - the vents were made to blow towards the bed directly and this means also directly towards your face - and even at low fan speed and reasonable temperatuer (22-23 deg) it was still not the most comfortable feeling - and switching it off lead to the room being too warm. The bathroom size like the room was on the small side. Shower was good, with good pressure and temperature control. I am not sure if it was only my room, but if you have the water too high the outside area of the bath area would be slightly flooded. Breakfast Breakfast was served on the 8th floor (if I remember correctly) which is the same floor as the pool area. Breakfast spread was as expected for a HGI property - with a mix of local flavors and western options. As usual staff were ok - again textbook behaviour. They had eggs to order option. Quality was in my opinion ok. During my 2 nights stay, I did notice some of the items were different - so this should be ok for those with longer stays and breakfast should not be too monotonous. Pool The pool area was on the smaller side, but it did have a nice view of the downtown CBD area. there were a few lounge chairs and the water temperature was good. Overall All in all, it was a mix bag - from value point, at least for the price I paid, it was ok if I compared it to other hotels of the same level, but by itself, I feel that the value for the asking price was not the most value - although I guess with the hotel being fully occupied the hotel will most probably not be bothered how they treat elite members as they have sufficient business. I will seriously consider returning to this property if I am in Singapore next - will depend mainly the price of the room.
