This is very true. I order the gluten free option because I am epi-pen allergic to wheat.

Over the past 3 months or so, the dinner option has been a meatball dish that scared the crap out of me but was actually fairly good (meatballs usually contain bread crumbs as a binder) with marinara, some kind of polenta cake and a salad, or a surprisingly tasty grilled chicken breast with incredibly sad wimpy wilty vegetables and a salad. I didn't get to pick between the two though - some flights it was one, some times the other.

In the same period, the GF breakfast has mostly been the "charcuterie tray". It's a little odd for breakfast, but I didn't die. One time the FA brought it with a croissant on the side. He got really embarrassed when I asked if it was part of the gluten free meal.

For the most part I haven't been served anything that was completely gross, but when I have time I would much rather eat in a restaurant before the flight.
