Many cases I have used family members credit cards to pay for nights so they make spend bonuses and I privately transferred them the money after.
Please don't confuse the fact that the rules weren't applied to you a few times with the fact that any Marriott hotel anywhere could decide to apply the written rules if it doesn't feel like paying for the points.
It's just like speeding. You might not get pulled over very often, but any police officer could decide to do so at any time - your argument of "I haven't been pulled over for speeding before" is irrelevant.
