You could have had you upgraded, and use up the RU, but when you board the plane you just ask the flight attendants to let you switch seats. I did that recently and they were happy to do so. They told me they are always happy to do it. The one thing you can't do, is switch mid flight with each other
We plan on doing exactly this should my Gold RU clear AKL-SIN PE->BP. That said Mrs TK is usually highly reluctant to do this. I’ll hit GE shortly, and seem better to burn 1 of 2 Gold RUs that will both otherwise just expire. Pity there isn’t an option to swap an RU for a ‘free’ domestic return flight.
