Where to start... Strange but pleasant-ish old world hotel. The positives: Great location and nice exterior.
After that, not so much. We arrived at 11:30pm-ish and were greeted by a well staffed but challenged front desk. Our check-in woman wound up assigning the boys a room that was already occupied, as in they opened the door to find a couple in bed... thankfully sleeping.

. She also made a big deal about our FHR benefits include complimentary room upgrades. That was pretty funny considering that the hotel was sold out there were no upgrades available. My first room was on the top floor which seemed like a block away, down a narrow hallway and with two port holes for windows. I headed downstairs and switched rooms to something on the 2nd floor with normal size windows and at least in the same time zone as the front desk and (tiny) elevators. Despite a $100 F&B credit, the hotel bar was so depressing that we passed and headed out for much more pleasant Edinburgh bar hopping. Breakfast was OK in a pleasant atrium restaurant. But I will never, ever have another Traditional Scottish Breakfast.

We were there around the same time...Your views are exactly as I expected

.
On the staffing...welcome to the UK, especially post Covid. Everywhere is held together with sticky tape now.
Looks like you had a King Premier view Castle View in the end, the attic was probably King Deluxe, so probably you were "upgraded". I especially liked the sound of water being turned on by my neighbours and running down some drain in my "Queen Suite". My partner remarked the furniture in the the rooms was ready for the skip in the late 90s...
One positive is, I can't think of any Hilton in the UK that gives you a Bloody Mary for brekkie.
I'd pick the Balmoral next time.
Great TR!
On EDI (and many UK airports) it really is third world. Where did all the money go? You should see GLA Int Pier

.. I suppose it would be cheap airport movie set for a 60s movie though.
