Quick question, if you pay at the counter for a preium economy upgrade shouldn't the fare class of the ticket change?

My original booking class was W and was credited to my UA FF account as that as well. It doesn't appear to make a difference in the mileage credit according to a calculator. More just for my future knowledge.
