Hard to put a specific percentage on it but roughly half the time I am just asked to confirm the last 4 digits of my credit card on file during check in. The other half of the time I am asked to do a physical card swipe during check in. For both cases, sometimes they also ask for photo id. I haven't been able to figure out a pattern as to when I am asked to do a card swipe at check in. Perhaps it is dependent on the PMS in use and/or the credit card processor the property uses. As long as the check in process is reasonably quick, it isn't a big deal to me either way. The overwhelming majority of the time check in is an efficient, quick, and uneventful process which is just how I like it. YMMV....
