That doesn't make sense. I would have thought it would be based on dollars, which would have been far more generous. I regularly fly that route, and even on BA metal, I think I have always maxed out the 75K award.
AA also calculated my BA flight (EXP in First) via the distance method and when I come back to the US I am going to call and try to get them to give me the many more LPs that I believe I earned.
