Could it make a difference whether you enter the credit card details while making the reservation for your hotel stay versus they have the number because it's attached to your Bonvoy account? Also, could how along ago your reservation was made matter, in that credit cards expire over time, so the hotel wants to make sure that the card is currently valid?

During a recent check in where I'm a frequent guest, the front desk agent just asked me whether the credit card I had in my hand ended in XXXXX. When I said yes, the agent waved the card away, not looking at it and not swiping it.
