In those cases, from the best of my recollection of the threads, people wrote or called in and Delta un-did the unwanted upgrade. (I’d suggest calling during regular M-F business hours so the skymiles desk is open.)
IIRC these cases were common when rollover first started and people here were talking a lot about the strategy to deliberately hold back in order to preserve rollover.
