For several hundred thousand miles, I would definitely not let them expire.

You can also buy miles, which I believe resets the counter:

Minimum amount is 2,000, and the cost is around $75. But before you do it, I would recommend calling AAdvantage customer service, and make sure the transaction will reset the counter, and that they will post in time.
