I like a gamble but not when it comes to checked in luggage, so always stick to the published rules especially as I travel with the missus. You must be able to shift the contents around to even out the weight surely? It's not that much difference. Or put some of the heavier items in your hand luggage. At least that way you'll have peace of mind.
