Sure, and you could also scan them and just make a mental note of which folder you saved them to, e.g., pictures, documents, etc. Probably easier to keep track of than paper copies?
PS - You could also use the cloud to back them up, such as Dropbox or iCloud, but I suppose that's a little too techie?
