At first, I thought "wow - for what that's going to cost, it really shows how much Amex thinks that the lounges add value to the Platinum product." But then it occurred to me that we don't know who's footing the bill for the construction. In fact, I think it may be that Amex's situation is that it signed a lease for the space not much different than at other airports, and the airport is paying for the new building and will recoup it over time, both in terms of lease revenue and making it a better airport in general, which is really no different than the extra space that was constructed into terminal buildings originally at other airports with the hope that they would be used by lounges someday.
