An upfare become part of the purchased fare and if you need to cancel / change transfers
An cash upgrade is non-refundable and can be forfeited on a change (sometime an agent will allow transferring the $ to a new reservation but not for a straight-out cancellation).

Note the upgrade does not transfer to a new flight in either case.
