I've driven a US rental car to Canada a few times. Just make sure that the rental agreement allows travel to Canada. Sometimes they only allow a limited geographic region (e.g. limited number of states) but even if there is a restriction they may change it for you.

I've also rented cars in the US with Canadian plates on them so clearly it happens a lot.
