For my 2nd LM ever, I quite enjoyed my stay, but not everything was perfect at this former Park Hyatt. Here are my pros, cons, a treatise on breakfast, and photos:
Pros:
- Upgraded without asking to a City by the Bay Suite - when I arrived, I found that I had actually been placed in the named "Promenade Suite" which had a clear exposure balcony with nothing above (very nice upgrade)
- Bed was fantastic - thick covers, plush mattress, plush pillows (what a standout bed)
- Couch in living room was very soft and comfortable
- Shower with window towards Bay Bridge and a Jacuzzi tub that I didn't use - shower pressure was great
- Fantastic location - so convenient to North Beach, Chinatown (I ran into a delightful Tai Chi performance for Chinatown Car Weekend), and the Ferry Building
- I found the design to be very fun - sure, it's 90s, but it was unique
- No issue with 4 PM late checkout
- Lots of bedside outlets on the headboard - very convenient
- Staff was overall friendly - holding open doors, etc.
- Towels were obviously new - very fluffy
Cons:
- No Internet TV OS
- Some wear-and-tear on furniture, for sure
A Treatise on Breakfast:
Yes, this is mostly a con, but I'll share my experience with the advice that you shouldn't normally take the breakfast choice for the welcome gift - I just got lucky. When I arrived around 7:15 AM, I walked into a Park Grill full of about 70-80 people very awake and speaking a lot of French. Nevertheless, the host found me a table and told me to eat at the buffet (just three rollable tables) and to take advantage of the hot food as they don't usually have that. Sure enough, there were dishes with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and a tray of pastries. Everything was decent - slightly better than lounge fare. However, about 10 minutes later, the staff came out and rolled the hot food table away - leaving two tables with just cereal, oatmeal, and fruit. Luckily, I had already gotten two helpings of the hot food, so I was all good, but the selection that was left and that would normally be there if there wasn't some sort of group was paltry and wouldn't even constitute a breakfast IMO. If they had pastries out, I could justify it, but nope, not just cereal and fruit. I will say that my server was quite nice and even brought me out a "special smoothie" in a shot glass - it was tasty (just strawberry banana). So, in conclusion, I had an enjoyable breakfast, but I know that most Elite members would not. The paltry "continental" offering really leaves a stain on what is a rather great hotel offering.
Conclusion:
Would I return? Perhaps, but the breakfast situation is a big turn-off, especially when other properties in SF are offering much more generous breakfasts (cough...St. Francis...cough). I guess I could just look at it like a Ritz and just pay for a la carte breakfast - I did love the room.
