I used to fly to Detroit and rent a car to drive to Toronto for work at least once a month. I never had a problem. Just make sure you have your passport. It doesn't seem to be like Mexico where the rental agreement specifically says not to drive across the border. But its not a bad idea to check with your rental car company.
