Spent a few nights in each of Almaty, Tbilisi and Yerevan before the pandemic. Took a couple of day trips from Yerevan (Geghard/Garni and Lake Sevan) and one from Tbilisi (Stepantsminda) as well. I enjoyed each city and side trip. Wouldn’t say they were very similar aside from the Soviet history and some leftover bad architecture. Tbilisi was certainly the most attractive of the three cities, architecturally and what not, and had the tastier cuisine, but Almaty does have a beautiful backdrop of mountains, so hope for clear skies. If you can squeeze it in, Baku is also worth a visit. It’s a wealthy and pretty city, reminiscent of Paris in many parts, with some interesting modern and ancient architectural sights, plus you can eat really well there (try the plov). There was no active fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan when I was in the region. Safe travels.
