I've heard enough stories of boarding passes expiring (here, Facebook, and Reddit), that I always just do a screen shot of mine, just in case, and usually also print one out. Can never be too careful...

But yes, most of what I've seen is that they expire and the passenger can't get through the security checkpoint. But I guess it makes sense for actual boarding too.
