I have done both on occasions, once you get the hang of it the sterile area walk through the tunnels is quite interesting. I guess it’s a matter of preference. Timewise the sterile area is much faster all thing considered

I get the "fresh" air aspect, but with all the construction, I find LAX sidewalks to be crowded and loud with the added bonus of heavy traffic nearby. I'm a tunnel-er.
