may be something to this.
I was entering one of the courthouses in downtown NYC with a new belt. I totally forgot I had it on and it set off the metal detector.
I realized it was my belt and was about to take it off, but the guy told me to walk back through, but this time cover the buckle up by making a fist around it.
The alarm still went off, but there was another dense piece of metal at the end of my belt that wasn't covered up which would have been enough to set the detector off by itself.
