The last company that tried to make a business of issuing private Amex cards in Denmark was Danske Bank, so it not like there was no bank support for issuing Amex. I used to have a Danske Bank Amex, for a while Danske Bank were quite aggressive in pushing their Amex cards. But I would imagine that they parted ways over cost and profit disagreements.
I would have thought they parted ways based on not being able to get and retain a material enough membership fee-paying customer base for a product with such poor Danish retailer acceptance rates at the time. FWIW or not, my Amex cards still seem less widely accepted in Denmark than in Sweden.
