Not in BA, but being nice to a Gate agent and volunteering to get bumped on a very busy flight out of Miami helped me get an F seat on MIA-JFK on AA a few months ago. I was confused as to how a "fully booked" flight had an empty seat in F, but didnt worry about it much.
AA flights that are expected to be full that leave from hubs often end up having spare seats due to people misconnecting.
