Cause of the delay out of Cleveland was "thunderstorms in the midwest" affecting the plane 3 segments prior to it getting to CLE. We were scheduled to arrive at IAD at 5:00pm with the Athens flight scheduled to depart at 5:20pm. They delayed the Athens flight til 5:32pm. I arrived at the gate at 5:32pm. I guess my biggest gripe is the captains announcement on our flight specifically about Athens and the app showing how "happy" they were going to make us.

Did not pay for E+ seats. Included with status.

We were a traveling party of 4. There were 5 flights to Europe out of IAD the rest of the night that had star alliance connections to Athens. Problem was there was only one option for 2 of the 4 to go through Frankfurt. The other 2 would have to go the next day on the UA flight. All other options were full.

Was not a refundable ticket. When we arrived to customer service we were pushed to use the virtual "scan the qr code" to speak to an agent method. I did and explained "can you get us to Frankfurt or Munich" to connect. It was so unhelpful. The agent was saying "why would you want to go to Germany to get to Greece?" I don't know -- because I want to get moving and head east rather than sit in Virginia for 24 hours.

Got to gate at 5:32pm. Original scheduled departure time was 5:20pm. Delayed departure time was 5:32pm.

Completely agree. We all have reasons for deviating from the norm. In my instance for the "prepaid" car rental -- I needed a very specific car type. A 9 passenger "mini bus". To hold that type of vehicle required a prepayment due to the low quantity of vehicles available and the fact that no other vehicle would fit my party I was meeting up with.
File a claim with your travel insurance for delayed trip.
1 hr cnx time dom>intl means you really didn't want to get on that flight in a hiccup.
I empathize with having the door slammed in your face but been there done that have the t-shirt. It's why some build long layovers to mitigate irrop issues. Not saying it could be avoided in your situation..don't know flight schedules.
