After more than 90 days since I reached out for a refund, United tells me they are willing to give me a refund of $1000 as goodwill. And each time I try explain the oddity of their response, I am told "we are sorry that we cannot agree, this our last offer". Their most recent response is that they already refunded me in December 2021 -- before the ticket was even purchased!
$1000 for goodwill definitely sounds like EC.261 compensation, which would be due for any last-minute cancellation if the issue were controllable. What was the reason for the cancellation?

I assume you've checked your credit card in detail to see about the refund? I've had more than one refund from UA show up with an old enough posting date that I didn't see it until I went back several days on my credit card (I.e., on 9/15 I might suddenly have a refund dated to 9/9 that wasn't there yesterday).
