You might want to take the money you were going to use for those annual fees and purchase upgrades out of pocket on the occasional domestic flight.

With that being said, you won't get complimentary international upgrades on AA or UA, either. It sounds like you might just want to shop around for the most convenient (and/or cheapest) fare for your international flying.
