You can sue in small claims court for the amount of monetary damages incurred, which in your case is $2k for the new flight minus whatever AA refunded you. If the delay caused additional hotel costs or a material loss at your job (say, a loss of billable work hours), those can probably be claimed. I do not think small claims court can handle compensation for nonmonetary damages such as inconvenience or loss of vacation time.
