Allround there seem to be good experiences but i think it is better to email the hotel beforehand to set epectations.
After all there are so many different hotel styles / types that each has their own interpertation.

All participating hotels are different and the smith extra varies from breakfast to only a free tramticket.... yeah.....exciting...
Mind you the upgrade subject to availability rule, this will avoid dissapointment if you would email them inadvance stating you have specific wishes like a work desk / better lighting / no tub only shower agility etc.....because a peek at some of those hotels have all very different categories and inventory of rooms...... you could check on the hotel's own site if they still sell the roomtypes above yours booked as to better predict an upgrade......

Yes absolutely, I think I will email them and check out the IHG components of benefits. I can imagine that they may not be so familiar with the mechanics of those at this early time.
And yes will report back experiences. Think it was Stimpy recently who commented that RA reviews were a bit thin on the ground. I have to plead guilty of being a little lazy in this area.
