awful advice. Gatwick to London trains are frequent and unless in peak will have more than enough space for yourself and luggage, just as others have mentioned you'll be keeping bags with you.
Even at peak these days there's ample space. Good options with Southern/GX to Victoria and Thameslink running through central London. Preferable to LHR in my view.
