take the speculative “I don’t think” out, make this reply a declarative, and put the answer somewhere as a sticky, viz.:
There is nothing that inhibits upgrades if seats are not together. If you are on the same PNR and check in together, you will both be upgraded (or neither, if there is only one seat open).
