I also find transcon is more difficult and they might actually sell it out, SFO->JFK tough but SFO->EWR more manageable and with some flexibility I can use a GGU.

SFO->HNL I risk it and get upgraded frequently when flying solo but when my SO travels with me I can often use a GGU with a little advance planning.
