Thank you. They have indeed called EK and managed to get the flights they want which is great stuff, as they were stressing about it a bit, and are now sorted. Flights aren't until March though so I don't think EC261 compensation is at play as >14 days out? In any case they are pleased not to have a ~31hr trip to Thailand now!
The BA has a comprehensive thread for EC261 compensation, so probably worth confirming on there. I *think* the 14 day rule only applied to cancellations, not delays (or retimings).
