Are BA responsible for expenses reimbursement?

Hi all,

A family member bought a ticket on ba.com travelling from Inverness to Vancouver via Heathrow and Dallas. The flight from Dallas to Vancouver operated by American airlines was cancelled while he was on route to Dallas. The earliest available flight American airlines could offer was two days after he arrived in Dallas.

As a result of the cancellation he had to spend two nights at an airport hotel in Dallas and so my question is who is responsible for reimbursement of the hotel and meal costs during those two days? He submitted a claim on ba.com but they replied saying it is the responsibility of American airlines. AA have told him he needs to make a claim with BA as he purchased a ticket with them. Any advice would be much appreciated.
