Not necessarily. You only have two years from a card's expiration date to transfer the value to the new card, and that can be done at a Metrocard vending machine only within one year of expiration. Between one and two years of expiration, the card has to be mailed in. A subway station booth attendant can provide a postpaid envelope for mailing in an expired Metrocard.
