In addition to what others have said, it's also worth considering the flexibility afforded by using miles, which is what I did when each of my parents died. Being able to change your return at shortish notice without fees depending on how the situation develops was very helpful. Of course this is not as much of a factor in these no-change-fee days, but that's not a permanent policy.
