Paris isn't any more prone to petty crime than any other large city IME (Barcelona, Rome). I've visited 20+ times and have never experienced a theft. We carry small wallets with only one credit card each and minimal cash, always zipped in an interior pocket. Women should always use a crossbody bag with zippers and strap that can't be sliced, and carry it in front at all times.
