If you place a flight on hold and then pay for it online before the hold expires, the original price is preserved. If you call to ticket it for whatever reason, including using a flight credit, the reservation reprices in the agent's system. You have to be alert to the change because I don't think it's obvious to the agent. AA will honor the original price but the agent has to call the help desk to make that happen.
