Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit 11

Introduction I had a stay at Mercure Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 which turned out to be far above my expectations. I have stayed at about 10 Accor hotels in this price range and I would say Mercure 11 is by far the best value for the money in my opinion. Even if I expand the field to non-Accor hotels where I stayed before, then it would add roughly another 10 (again, limiting to hotels of the same caliber), and Mercure 11 would still come out on top of my list. Almost everything at Mercure 11 was positive: nice quality room, spacious suite upgrade, an attractive lounge, excellent service, good location, and all that at reasonable price. In hotel reviews I do not hesitate to criticize harshly when a hotel performs poorly but this one is at the complete other end of the scale and I would dare to say that this “midscale” hotel is above many “premium” brand hotels despite being less expensive. I would not hesitate one bit to highly recommend Mercure 11 especially to Accor Platinum-Diamond guests on a budget. Check In I find that at some Accor hotels in Bangkok, receiving a suite upgrade is like pulling teeth and sometimes even after discussion at check-in they simply refuse as a matter of policy. At Mercure 11 I arrived at the hotel late morning which is often a time where it’s even less likely to get an upgrade, but they proactively upgraded me to a suite which was refreshing. It was a precursor of how the service was going to be for the rest of my stay: the emphasis was constantly on trying to please guests. Room Midscale hotels tend to have a bit smaller rooms, but the suite at Mercure was one of the most spacious (87 sqm) I have seen in Bangkok before. The suite had not 1.5 bath, but 2 full bathrooms, one with a shower and separate bathtub, and the other with shower only. Having two full bathrooms is something I only recall seeing in hotels which have long-stay apartment style rooms with kitchens. Not only the suite was big, but it was well designed and fairly modern with quality materials, not run down or aging. The bed was comfortable and air conditioning was strong. If I only had one mild negative to mention it would be that the showers were a bit small and because the door opened by pushing in, we had to squeeze a bit to get in. Dining The lounge was quiet any time of day that I went so it was a great place to relax unlike some of the more crowded lounge in the city nowadays (mostly Marriott lounges). The venue had very nice colorful décor. Between 5pm-7pm I was pleasantly surprised to see an extensive cocktail list on the happy hour menu so for drinks it was better than many other lounges with limit choices to beer and wine, sometimes spirits. Food was more forgettable however; they brought a tray of hot food but it was mostly fried stuff. The buffet had healthier options but nothing that stood out. Unfortunately not only is the Argentinian Steakhouse restaurant outsourced and therefore not eligible for the Accor Plus dining discount, but the Lily Fu Asian bistro is as well. As an alternative, they offered 100 THB voucher for room service so it was the opposite of other hotels which don’t give a discount for room service: eating in the restaurant is necessary. Breakfast was served in the Lily Fu restaurant. Since it’s a separate restaurant which welcomes patrons from the street, they must offer a decent breakfast to attract clientele so the buffet was not bad by any stretch of the imagination. However I did not think it was a stand-out relative to other hotels so personally if I had to pay for it, I would not, but as the free Platinum/Diamond breakfast it was manageable. Similar to the lounge, I liked the venue more than the food – there was some seating outdoors and some indoors around the bar area. Service Back to Mercure 11 itself, as mentioned above service was excellent throughout and noticeable with lots of small details. For example, I was sitting in the lounge during the afternoon and they asked me permission to deliver the welcome amenity in the room; it was not absolutely necessary to ask me but I found it quite polite to do so. Before happy hour officially started at 5pm they asked me if I wanted alcoholic drinks, rather than be strict with the start time. For late check-out, they offered me 5pm which is later than almost any other hotel and I did not even need to twist arms. In the lounge, drink refills were frequent and proactive as well. Wifi Wifi worked ok with speed of 10 Mbps. Overall Overall Mercure Sukhumvit 11 is solid in almost all possible ways except for food (breakfast + lounge) where it’s not bad but merely average. The service would put to shame some hotels which are double the price, the room looked great, and the suite was very spacious. I am somewhat surprised it took me so long before trying this hotel; it seems it has been flying under the radar for too long.
