I agree with your comment that the OP has picked a good location. I disagree with your point that midtown is fun for a first-time visitor. It’s fine and convenient, but just dreadfully boring. Unlike midtown, where the places to walk are Times Square and the Theater District, the OP can walk easily to Chelsea, Chelsea Market, the Meatpacking District, and the West Village, and the rest of the city is just a train ride away. It’s not like they’re being confined to a residential area. They’re in the heart of the city!
