On AA's website I had to do something similar for BKK-LAX due to a short layover I wanted to be on the same ticket, I couldn't book it straight through from LAX-BKK. Instead, I had to use multi-city booking and go BKK-NRT and NRT-LAX on the same day and it let me book them and put them on the same ticket. With a 12-hour layover though, there's absolutely zero problems with you having two separate tickets.
