How does this work if it's the airline that does the cancelling instead of the passenger? For example, buy a round-trip ticket with the return scheduled far in the future, use the first half, and then see if they cancel or heavily reschedule that return flight.
Then you get a refund of the actual fare paid for the return. It's voluntary changes/refunds that cause repricing.
