Quite a few secondary points from Africa to South Asia are served by EK but not LH/TK.
Arguably having partnerships with AC and UA means they don't need to join *A but gain many of the benefits. Or perhaps they do plan to join *A? Time will tell.
It can't be a dramatic difference since TK claims (so I've read) they fly to more countries than any other airline.
