I suspect that what the OP is quoting is the each way price based on round trip. €1700 ish return does occur.

As others mentioned and beyond:

1) POUG and AUP are never guaranteed. They are not available on every flight, far from it;
2) POUG is never offered on a connecting itinerary so the only option would be AUP on the day of travel;
3) The typical price of AUPs can be checked in the relevant forum, but typically, it is more than the quoted difference between those fares and the J fare;
4) In my view, of late, buying Y and upgrading to C on European flights is also frequently more than buying C direct, especially during sales.
